Strawberries from Auntie Leah’s rooftop garden
April 12th in sleeper from Ryan (getting small!). Flipping through books and putting them over her face is a new pastime. It’s so great. She crawls off the bed, selects a book from my pile on the floor, climbs back onto the bed with it and flops down to “read” beside me.
April 3
Wren with broccoli in another tee shirt by Ben (octopus) on our 8th anniversary, 3/29
Wren is one today! The updates are: She is walking. In the last 2 days, she started taking off on her own without cheers or coaxing. I think she’s figuring out that it is faster than her half-crawl thing. She was sort of kneeling with one leg kicked out and half crawling, half walking (I’ll post a video).
She has 4 teeth now. The top front left is coming in. She won’t let me take a picture of them. She’s very protective of them. They get sore and she pulls her hair and howls. It’s sad. She bit her inside lip and bled yesterday and today! I guess this is part of the process!
As for talking, Wren says “Mama” and “Dada,” which is often “Dadoo.” She has been making a strong “t” sound for our cat, Tess. There are 2 big dogs in a yard out our back window. Wren puckers her lips way out and says something like, “Woof!” which gets the dogs excited and they bark. She does this when we pass other dogs, too. She has a few other sounds that signify things, like moo for cow, but so far, I haven’t recorded a “first word.” I see how moms don’t know these dates now… it’s a process of almost almost and when the event finally comes, it’s just the next tiny step.
Wren is very tall. We go to the doctor for her 1 year checkup tomorrow, so I will know more exact measurements, but we’ve met other babies her age and she is pretty much bigger than all of them! We went to a playgroup a couple of times and she had fun! The leader of the group said that Wren is the most outgoing under one year old she has ever met. Someone else commented that she is absolutely fearless. While I was signing us in on the first day, she crawled under the gate and straight into the middle of the action! It was funny to watch her. She explored everything, hardly giving me a second look. She ate her first playdough (blue everywhere) and was pushed over by another kid for the first time (that I’ve seen). She didn’t cry, she just stared. Then, later she yanked another little guy to the ground. He bawled. I felt bad, but his mom laughed.
Probably like most kids, Wren loves to be chased. She pants and laughs shriekingly. She learned to unpack toys from her basket and books from the shelf, clothes from drawers, etc. a while ago, but in the last week, she has learned to put things back in their places. It’s funny. She puts weird chewed foods into my bowl and stuffed animals into her oatmeal.
I guess I will quit here. I will post some pictures soon. We are having a party on Saturday. I am thinking of decorations. It will be fun! Thanks for reading.
